ENNO RIJPMA
Enno Rijpma
Enno Rijpma (1944) is a Dutch artist and photographer, known for his monumental work with a surrealist character. His work is characterized by strong composition, use of color and an abstract vision of everyday and current topics.
BIOGRAPHY AND BACKGROUND
Enno Rijpma worked for many years as a photographer and writer for print media. He also published several portrait books. Later—on the advice of the then director of the Rijksmuseum, Wim Pijbes—he began a career as a visual artist.
ARTISTIC WORK AND STYLE
His work often focuses on balance and color, with particular attention to composition and confusion. He transforms everyday scenes – interi- ors, objects, buildings, landscapes into visually powerful images.
He is inspired by, among others, Magritte (surrealism), M.C. Escher (perspective and visual illusion) and Andreas Gursky (large-scale, monumental). In later periods, he sometimes returns to abstraction – processing with digital techniques, making images seem almost like painting. He describes it as “painting with my computer on the pixels of reality”.
His work is in the possession of several internationally renowned art collections.
One of his better-known projects/ series is ‘The Colors of Enno’, a year-long trip around the world in collaboration with one of the world’s leading paint companies, AkzoNobel.
CAREER PATH
Before his switch to artistry, he was responsible for long-running portrait series for print media – both as a photographer and writer.
Since the switch to visual art, he has devoted himself entirely to creating photographic (and digitally manipulated) works.
